Is it time for SpaceX to begin scanning the night sky for new worlds, new galaxies, or even other lifeforms? In a recent tweet, Musk said that the starship rocket could be used to host a giant telescope that would have 10X the resolution power of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Musk must be extremely confident that the starship could be used to revolutionize astronomical observations because he has been discussing it with a Nobel Prize winning astrophysicist. Elon Musk’s latest comments on turning the SpaceX Starship rocket into a structure that will harbor a giant space telescope adds to the growing list of functions that the Starship could potentially carry out once it’s successfully launched. As it stands, the Starship is planned to ferry astronauts to the moon, clean up any space junk or debris left behind, as well as help establish a human colony on Mars.

Let’s face it, once Starship becomes operational, it will be the most powerful rocket on the planet with the largest payload capacity compared to any other commercial rocket currently in operation. So you can only imagine the sheer potential of astronomical discoveries that will be made once scientific instruments and a giant telescope are added into the mix! It will leave the James Webb telescope in the dust! Also, NASA recently awarded SpaceX an additional cargo contract to construct and launch the SPHEREx space telescope. This telescope will be tasked with scanning the entire sky for groundbreaking observations over a span of two years. However, it won’t be operational until 2024.
