Have you ever felt lonely and forgotten? With the population hitting almost 7.3 billion people we all feel lonely from time to time. So, in today’s video Smart is the New Sexy will tell you what would happen if all people lived in just one huge building. Keep watching if you want to know how you would feel there, how many neighbors you would have, and what size the building would have to be.
The building’s total population
There are approximately 7.3 billion people living in the world today. Since the 1970s, the global population has also more than doubled in size. It is estimated that the global population will reach and surpass 8 billion people by 2025. It means that by the time we construct the building of a proper size it would have to house at least 8 billion people. Wow, that’s a lot.
Let’s see what it might look like on a smaller scale. There are many small towns in the world where people live in fly-in/fly-out camps such as towns in Alaska or small settlements of the Pilbara region, Australia. It’s not economically profitable for big companies to construct many buildings in the areas where people don’t want to live for the long term future due to climate changes, lack of facilities, or remote location from big cities. That’s why they build one big building where all workers live together for several months. Such buildings have all the necessary facilities to make people’s life comfortable. This is pretty much the gist of what we need to make. It’s easy to fit 500 people in one building, but what should we do with the rest of the population?
First, let’s count how many people we can fit in 1 square meter. Since it’s a theoretical calculation, we assume that 4 people would pretty safe in 1m2. Of course, we take much more space in real life to lie down or stretch our legs, but let’s think for a moment that we’ll come up with technology that’ll allow us to sleep in a vertical position. Actually, we thought about 5 people in the first place, but it might be too uncomfortable - what if someone is pregnant or obese? That makes 4 people in 1m2 a possible outcome.
