10 Reasons to Kill Valentine's Day

Sure, millions of people flock to malls, florists, and restaurants to take part in Valentine's Day rituals, but does anybody really enjoy it? Honestly, if it disappeared would you even miss it? Here are 10 reasons to just pull the plug on the puffed up holiday once and for all.

Sure, millions of people flock to malls, florists, and restaurants to take part in Valentine's Day rituals, but does anybody really enjoy it? Honestly, if it disappeared would you even miss it?

Here are 10 reasons to just pull the plug on the puffed up holiday once and for all.

Number 10. Overpriced roses. On average, expect to pay double what you would have the week before. Florists blame growers. Growers explain their price hike by uttering a single word: perishable. Neither the rose nor its sentiment will smell as sweet if delivered outside of the optimal window, February 14th.

Number 9. Overpriced food. Restaurants are well aware of the important role they play, and if you want their help in making a memorable evening, it'll cost you. Even places that normally serve modest fare seem to suddenly have menus filled with filet mignon, lobster, and caviar.

Number 8. Supersized Expectations. All of the hype for many ignites overblown fantasies about how the day is going to go.

Number 7. Cheesy television commercials. Some advertisements, typically those that feature the giving of lavish jewelry, are steeped in so much forced sticky sweetness they're physically uncomfortable to watch. Unfortunately, doing so at this time of year is unavoidable.

Number 6. It's tough for singles.

Why do you hate heart shaped candy?

I think it because reminds me that this is Valentine's Day and I am recently single.

What makes it worse are the two common ways happily coupled people try to provide solace: pity and stupid advice.

Number 5. Picking the right gift is hard. Giving the wrong thing can ruin the evening and strain your relationship. Really, if the damage stops there, you're lucky.

Number 4. It has highly questionable roots. We blame greeting card companies and florists for it, but nobody's really sure how it happened. Romans had a mid-February holiday where they whipped women with dead animal pelts to heighten fertility. On the February 14th of 2 separate years Emperor Claudius had two men named Valentine executed. Certainly not much romance to be found there.

Number 3. Sugar kills. According to the CDC, eating too much of it can lead to heart disease, heightening a person's risk of death.

Number 2. Valentine's Day is dangerous. Last year in India, a radical Hindu group attacked unmarried couples they witnessed celebrating it. They call the day of love a Western blight on the landscape of Indian culture.

Number 1. It's bad for the planet. Every year, nearly 150 million Valentine's day cards are sold. Let's face it, no matter how touching they were at the time, most of them are going to end up as landfill. Add in the over-sized candy boxes and well-intended teddy bears and you've got the makings of an ecological nightmare.
