The range-topping Golf is powered by the familiar 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged mill which has been tweaked to provide 300 HP (221 kW), making it 30 HP (22 kW) more powerful than its predecessor. The power is delivered between 5,500 rpm and 6,200 rpm, while peak torque has gone up by 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) between 1,800 rpm and 5,500 rpm.

Improvements over the 230 HP (169 kW) GTI's engine include new cylinder heads, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, turbocharger, high-pressure injection valves and pistons. Power is delivered to a permanent all-wheel drive 4MOTION system with fifth-gen Haldex coupling through a six-speed manual gearbox which enables the Golf R to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.1 seconds or in 4.9 seconds when mated to the optional six-speed DSG. Regardless of transmission choice, Volkswagen has limited the top speed to 155 mph (250 km/h).
