2020 BMW 3 Series first drive review
The all-new 3 Series proves BMW can still build a compelling sport sedan
One year removed from an updated 3 Series, all-new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive sedans will arrive. The new models represent the seventh-generation of BMW’s quintessential M sport sedans. The duo builds on the 3 Series’ impressive technologies and good standard safety tech, adding updated performance enhancements to keep the M3 at the top of its game.

The 2020 BMW M3 has standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Seating is for five, although it is ideal for four. The standard sport seats deliver superior lateral support and now offer a wider range of adjustment. Leather seats are optional.

BMW says the front seats offer increased shoulder room, while rear seating passengers benefit from more legroom. All occupants will find increased headroom.

Powering both models is a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with an updated and quicker responding twin-scroll turbocharger. This engine makes 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque for an estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds.

The lone transmission is an 8-speed automatic transmission as the previously available 6-speed manual gearbox has been dropped. The M3’s transmission features quicker shifting than before, a manual override and is tied in with launch control.
The M3 benefits from a new suspension and damping system, which supplies balanced handling for improved cornering and reduced body dive. An optional adaptive M suspension is an electronically controlled system with new valves and optimized management through the driving experience control knob. All models have an electronically controlled, fully variable locking rear differential.

Overall, the M3 has evolved looks with narrower front roof pillars, a wider rear window and a slightly larger standard sunroof. All models come with frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation and lane departure warning. An optional blind spot detection system, rear cross-protection and cross-traffic alert are part of a Driving Assistant Package. Other changes include an available head-up display, which is 70-percent larger than before and a Parking Assistant Package with backup assistant.
