The Subaru Outback is one of the most popular SUVs on the market today. It's also Edmunds' top-ranked midsize SUV thanks to its comfortable interior, impressive safety tech and abundant standard features. The 2020 Outback is all-new, though, and this redesign gets several updates that make it even stronger. We take a closer look at the new Outback, along with a breakdown of all the relevant specs, right where it debuted: at the New York Auto Show.

The 2020 Outback gets new looks, new headlights and taillights, a new (optional) 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and two new engines. The new 2020 Outback will be available in seven trim levels: base, Premium, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and Touring XT. The base, Premium, Limited and Touring models all get the 2.5-liter engine, while XT models are equipped with the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine.

The base engine, a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, is the same design as the previous generation, but 90% of the parts are new. This new engine gets marginal increases in power and fuel economy. Power is up from last year's 175 horsepower to 182 hp. Torque gets a similarly modest increase from 174 pound-feet to 176 lb-ft, as does fuel economy. The new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder pumps out 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque.

Official pricing data isn't out for the 2020 Outback yet, but based on the pricing of the old model, it'll probably land somewhere between $27,000 and $40,000, depending on equipment. The 2020 Subaru Outback goes on sale in fall of 2019. Put it up against other Edmunds' top-ranked midsize SUVs such as the Toyota 4Runner, the Nissan Murano and the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and be sure to take your favorites for a test drive.
