2024 BMW X5 and X6 First Look: More Power, Less Driving
The optional M Sport package now comes with a "Sprint" feature that can activate all sport drive settings with the press of a button.
The time has come yet again for BMW to update its tried-and-true original SUV, the midsize X5, and its "coupe" version, the BMW X6, for 2024. This year's update adds more hybrid power, improved EV-only range, and a new automated driving "assistant" program that allows for some limited access to hands-free driving on select highways.
2024 BMW X5 and X6 Design
The X5 and X6 don narrower headlights with arrow-shaped DRL indicators, an optional illuminated kidney grille on each trim now, new vertical air curtains on the bumpers, and a new lower intake with triangular shapes. Out back, the SUV gets fiber-optic lights in a new X-shaped motif and resculpted bumpers. The X6 gets a new gloss black upper spoiler.
For those concerned after seeing the latest X7 SUV's huge buck-tooth grilles, fret not. The new X5 and X6 M60i xDrive get a double-barred kidney grille with an M logo, gloss black mirror caps, and quad tailpipes to make the V-8 sing. The available M Sport package (standard on the X6) offers an M-design front apron, gloss black roof rails and Shadowline trim, and a trapezoidal tailpipe surround out back. The M Sport Professional package builds on that with matte black trim finishes, black chrome tailpipes, and M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers. However, the X5 is not available with the X6's optional M Sport exhaust system.
There are also new paint finishes for this year, including Marina Bay Blue Metallic, Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic, Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Skyscraper Grey Metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey Metallic. We struggle to imagine BMW customers were wanting for more gray or silver shades, but hey—can't control what people buy. There's also your choice of standard or M-design 20-, 21-, and 22-inch wheels either available with run flats, performance run flats, or just performance tires on the biggest set.
2024 BMW X5 and X6 Interior
Altogether, the cabins of the new X5 and X6 get 27.3 inches of screen, with a 12.3-inch unit behind the steering wheel for the driver and a curved 14.9-inch touchscreen unit for the dashboard running BMW's iDrive 8 user interface program, including gesture control and voice activation, all behind a single continuous glass surface. It hides away the newly discreet thin air vents, and it incorporates a long crystal ambient light bar with the choice of 15 colors. The available Executive package adds glass finish to the new selector toggle, stop-start button, and iDrive controller.
Sport seating comes standard, with optional ventilated and massaging multicontour units available. They're wrapped in Sensafin leather upholstery in Silverstone, Coffee, Cognac, or Black coloring, or you can opt for Merino leather in Ivory, Coffee, Black, or Tartufo.
2024 BMW X5 and X6 Power
An updated 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gets electronic camshaft timing and, on plug-in-hybrid X5 xDrive50e models, pairs with an inline electric drive unit on the eight-speed transmission pulling energy from a 25.7-kWh battery pack, altogether totaling an output of 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque with a purely electric driving range of about 40 miles. It can get from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.6 seconds. Entry-level xDrive40 versions of the X5 and X6 get the same updated 3.0-liter inline-sixes with mild hybridization and boast an additional 40 hp and 51 lb-ft of torque over their predecessors, for 375 hp and 383 lb-ft.
The M60i models also get an updated 4.4-liter turbo V-8 with 48-volt hybrid tech, making 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, pushing the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 4.2 seconds. Now, V-8 models and I-6 models with the optional M Sport package will get a new Sport function, where pulling on the left shifter paddle for one second engages the lowest possible gear and everything switched to its sportiest setting with electric boost enabled for a "sprint" of quicker acceleration.
The M60i comes standard with Adaptive M Suspension (it's an option on the rest of the trim lineup) with electronic dampers. Also standard for M60i is Integral Active Steering, which turns all four wheels to assist in better maneuverability. There's also two-axle air suspension standard on the xDrive 50e and optional elsewhere, which automatically lowers 10 millimeters (0.4 inch) above 86 mph.
