Check out 5 amazing facts concerning jellyfish.

Jellyfish are certainly among the most unique creatures of our planet. Here are 5 facts that make them extraordinary..

Number 5 -- They all possess one opening that acts as an anus and mouth. It's used for taking in food as well as removing waste.

Number 4 -- The origin of the jellyfish stretches back over 500 million years ago, thanks to the oldest fossil ever located which was discovered in Utah in 2007.

Number 3 -- The bioluminescence of jellyfish is not only a beautiful wonder, but also helps to light up and view the inner workings of the human body. The green fluorescent protein is currently used as an illuminating marker for scientists to view and track protein movements that were previously invisible.

Number 2 -- The natural invertebrates are actually quite powerful, strong enough to wipe out a nuclear reactor. In one incident a swarm of jellies landed in the pipes of a Swedish nuclear plant, forcing it to temporarily shut down.

Number 1 -- The jellies are energy efficient, at least in their own unique way. Jellyfish move around in a series of surges and pauses. When they decelerate to temporarily halt movement, the water behind them is displaced, creating a whirlpool which propels them forward. That simple action allows them to use much less energy than their fellow sea creatures.
