Bill McGowan, Founder & CEO of Clarity Media Group coaches people to become more effective verbal communicators in the pages of his new book "Pitch Perfect -- How to Say it Right the First Time Every Time". The parallels between nutritional health and sound communication are quite astonishing.

• The public speaking equivalent of avoiding empty calories is eliminating filler words: "like, um, you know, kind of/sort of, well, I mean," etc. Most people do not put enough thought into the first words out of their mouths and as a result begin by uttering meaningless filler instead of hearty content.
• Professional jargon, obscure acronyms and made-up words like "choiceful," are not unlike genetically modified or artificial foods. They are every bit as synthetic as an ingredient like Butylated Hydroxyanisole on a food label.
• Speaking too fast leads to a whole host of problems, not the least of which is saying the first thing that pops into your head. Slowing your speaking pace allows your brain more time to navigate ahead and be selective about what you say next.
• In verbal communication, more is not more. If more people were put on a verbal diet (only 12,000 spoken words per day) they would be forced to be more selective in what they say and as a result, more effective and memorable.
