Hello everyone! Welcome to our amazing channel. In today’s video Smart is the New Sexy is going to tell you about the most incredible natural phenomenon that happens every second on our planet - lightning. Let’s dive into the science of lightning on Earth and other planets.

Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground. On Earth, approximately 50 to 100 discharges of lightning occur every second, but the number of flashes at any single spot is much lower. The highest concentration of lightning strikes is in Central Africa, the Himalayas, and South America. In the US lightning most often occur in Florida. You often see it as flashes between the storm clouds and the earth. Bolts may appear as bead, sheet, ribbon, or rocket lightning. They can even reach the ground.

Lightning is one of the most devastating forces in nature. Lightning is extremely hot. Is a flash of lightning hotter than the Sun? The answer is yes, it can reach temperatures of roughly 53,000 F. The sun’s surface temperature is just 10,340 F. It’s science, baby. The sun's surface is actually its coolest layer. Dive down to its core, and you'd find boiling plasma with a temperature of about 27 million F.

As for the lightning, one area is warmer than another, and warm air rises since it's less dense. When you have moisture in the air, that package of air can go up much higher than it would otherwise. That's the basis of very strong convection. Basically, the sun creates such powerful source of energy by heating the ground. The bursts of light are pure electricity. Tesla would be pleased. This heat causes surrounding air to quickly expand and vibrate, which creates the pealing thunder we hear a short time after seeing a lightning flash.
