The new Ford Bronco is one of the hottest SUVs of the moment, but how does it compare to the Jeep Wrangler, which has long been the quintessential American off-roader? With Nicola Hume behind the wheel of the Ford, and Yousuf Ashraf choosing the Jeep, we put both to the test to find out.

The Bronco’s retro design has captured the hearts of many, forcing Ford to sell it in Europe due to high demand, and Nicola will be hoping that its more modern underpinnings will give it an advantage over the Jeep. To counter this, Yousuf has chosen the fastest and most capable Wrangler of them all - the 392. Fitted with a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, the 392 gets raised off-road suspension, knobbly tyres to tackle the rough stuff and far more firepower than Nicola’s 2.3-litre four-cylinder Bronco.

On paper, then, this is a bit of a mismatch. But as we found out, the inherent qualities of each car are evident beyond the engines and performance, even though neither excels in central London at rush hour…
