The HBO’s The Last of Us  stuck pretty close to its video game roots for the first two episodes, but the third makes some pretty major changes. Shifting the focus from Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to the grizzled doomsday prepper survivalist Bill (Nick Offerman) and his partner Frank (Murray Bartlett), giving the pair a story arc that has similar themes and beats to their video game roles, but in a way that feels authentic and faithful at the same time. Adaptation implies change, and change might be hard, but it’s often for the best. Let’s break down some of the ways the live action re-imagining of the beloved Naughty Dog game does these characters justice in a way that supplements their apparances in the hit PlayStation 3 (and PS4 and PS5) games, even if it doesn’t have quite as much tense survival horror action as players might expect.
