Edmunds Senior Reviews Editor Mark Takahashi was very fond of the 8 Series coupe from the 1990s. He set off to find out if this new 2019 BMW 8 Series lives up to his expectations by touring through Portugal and turning some laps at the Estoril race circuit. Also on his mind is how the 8 Series stacks up to its main rivals.

Q: How much will the 2019 BMW 8 Series cost?
A: Prices will start around $113,000.

Q: When will the 2019 BMW 8 Series go on sale?
A: Look for it in dealerships this December.

Q: What's under the hood?
A: The 8 Series is motivated by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that cranks out 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.

Q: How fast is it?
A: BMW estimates it'll reach 62 mph in 3.7 seconds on its way to a 155-mph top speed.

Q: What does it compete against?
A: Its main rival is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and maybe the Porsche 911, too.

Q: How many versions will be available?
A: The M850i coupe will be the first to market. A convertible will follow, as will a larger Gran Coupe sedan. We're really excited that an M8 will be forthcoming, too!
