As part of the effort in achieving this, the J-10 was designed to run a 105mm EDF supplied by a 120A custom HobbyWing ESC specific to the J-10. The EDF unit and housing are constructed using a nylon composite material due to the material's optimal strength to weight ratio, and the custom HobbyWing ESC is wired to provide a direct line of power to the PCBs controlling sub systems such as the retracts, navigation lights, and gear doors instead of through the receiver as is done predominantly. The J-10's control surfaces are all powered by 12g metal gear digital servos, with the exception of the canards which contribute heavily to the J-10's maneuverability, they are instead powered by a larger 40g metal gear digital servo.
