He had one of the biggest blockbusters of 2015 with Mad Max: Fury Road. And now he’s an odds-on favorite to take over for Daniel Craig as James Bond. As Hollywood’s latest superstar, Tom Hardy is everywhere these days.

But get ready to see even more of him starting this Friday, because when you buy a ticket to his latest movie, Legend, you’ll be getting double the Hardy for the price of one. That’s because the in-demand leading man is playing both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, two of London’s most notorious gangsters, in the ‘60s-set crime thriller. (Be sure to visit the Kray Twins' East London.)

Telling the true story of the infamous Kray twins, two small-time East End gangsters who went on to become kings of the London underground and celebrities in their own right, Legend charts the brothers’ swift rise to power before their burgeoning criminal empire came crashing down. It’s a classic gangster cautionary tale from writer/director Brian Helgeland, driven by a masterful dual performance from Hardy, as two identical twins who couldn’t be more different – Ronnie a volatile, unpredictable sociopath and Reggie the charming face of the operation, though no less dangerous.

Their meteoric ascent to the top of the criminal food chain and ensuing celebrity status made legends out of the Krays. Some kids growing up dreaming of becoming professional athletes, actors or rock stars; the Krays dreamt of becoming gangsters, and became veritable rock stars in the process. And while they’re likely better known in the UK than North America some 50 years later, according to Helgeland, in London, it still seems like almost everyone has a tale to tell about the twins. Legend is simply his version of the pair’s story, narrated by Emily Browning as Reggie’s wife Frances, who threatens to come between the two brothers and their quest for London-wide domination.

AskMen sat down with Hardy, Helgeland and Browning before the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where we spoke to the three about how Hardy tackled the dual role, the enduring allure of gangster movies and the gangster lifestyle, and doing the infamous Krays and their story justice. Check out the interviews above. Then take a look at Tom Hardy's best characters ever.
