Star Trek fan or not, all of us owe a lot of thanks to the classic sci-fi series for many important pieces of consumer technology that we all use day in and day out. People have made a habit of creating lists of technologies largely inspired by the show. But one technology a lot of fans have been eager to see become a reality, and for good reason, is the Holodeck.
Microsoft has been working on a proof-of-concept for a while now that they’re calling RoomAlive. By using a series of projectors and Kinect sensors their prototype will let you turn your living room into a fully interactive game. The Kinect sensors are able to determine depth information about all the objects in the room, allowing users to fully interact with the environment. Projectors on the ceiling then work together to coat the entire space with imagery, and the Kinect sensors keep track of the position of your body at all times. Beyond gaming, though, the technology can be used to simply set a scene in a room, even if its not going to become an interactive game. It’s unclear whether this is going to be coming to consumers at some point or not, but either way it’s an interesting project, and just goes to show how dedicated the tech space is to exploring all manner of virtual reality once again.
What do you think of Microsoft’s RoomAlive project though? Let us know in the comments below!
