Morph Suiting Is Japan’s Newest Trend | News House

If you find yourself watching the clock on the daily, counting down the minutes to quitting time so you can hurry home to your onesie, a night of solo snuggles with your sofa and some light-hearted fare on Netflix, it may be time to dust off your CV and find a better gig. On the other hand, you may just need to don a colourful morph suit and walk around the city interacting with everyone in silence like a creepy faceless super hero (who fights zero crime, while giving zero effs). At least, that's what Japanese adherents to ZENTAI might have you do to escape the demands of everyday life.

Japanese business men, students and seniors all seem to be eager to escape the high pressures of daily decorum by embracing morph suiting, or Zentai, as they take to the streets to be anybody they want to be. Assuming the person they want to be is a silent, lycra-clad creeper. One Zentai leader, Miu Fujitsuka, speaks of the "elegance of silence" which means "the more you hide, the more attractive your become". There's a reason Waldo has been on every Top Ten Sexiest Man list out of Japan for two decades running.

To be fair, the demands of everyday life may be a little different in Japan. It's a culture where conformity and social graces are placed far above one's individual need for self expression. There are a lot of social norms, unspoken rules and bowing. Lots of bowing. Which is actually one of the things we love most about Japan, the deep-rooted traditions. And why it's a very cool place to visit. It's also a country of impressive innovations. Case and point: advanced robotics is kind of their thing. But letting your freak flag fly is also well within their wheel house. Why? Because nobody gets that social rules were made to be broken better than Japan. So go ahead, put on a morph suit and get weird and relaxed all over town. NBD.

Put remember that when the Robopocalypse gets here, chances are good that the last thing you'll see before you get snuffed out, along with the last hopes for humanity, is a very well-made, highly efficient Japanese robot. In a morph suit. Because taking over the planet with your robotic Death Squad brethren is really stressful, darn it. And Japan gets that.
