Early leaks were accurate and Nikon’s latest DSLR looks like an excellent offering and upgrade from the D810. The Nikon D850 offers a 45.7 MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor. Sony has been using this type of sensor for a few generations of their mirrorless cameras and it allows for much better low light performance. The D850 is Capable of 7fps, 9fps when you attach the optional battery grip. For comparison the Nikon D5 shoots 12 frames per second at 20mp. The Canon 5D Mark IV does 7fps at 30MP. The D850s focusing system is borrowed from the Nikon D5,- that provides 153 AF points with 99 cross-type sensors and a host of AF tracking options. Low light focusing down to minus 4EV, the D810 while rated decently never actually performed great in low light, let’s hope real world performance of the D850 will match with the specs.
So -we should have excellent image quality, Nikon already has provided excellent image quality and very good dynamic range across the ISO range in their DSLRS and with the move to BSI sensor it should noticeably improve - that paired with 7fps and the D5’s AF system make this very attractive and very capable camera for everything from sports and wildlife to portraits and landscapes.
WIth video the D850 offers full frame 4k recording (no crop) like the Canon 5D Mark IV up to 30fps. Borrowing from mirrorless we have focus peaking but only at 1080p - I am curious what causes that limitation. Nikon doesn’t have higher end cinema cameras that they want to protect, like Canon - so does that mean the focus peaking limitation is not artificial but rather a processing power issue? You do get digital stabilization at 1080p too and They will offer highlight warnings in video through disappointingly the same live view focusing system (contrast detection) all these Nikon camera offer- not something you can use while recording, too noticeable and distracting unlike the very capable and smooth dual pixel AF system used in Canon.
Nikon continues to lead with their intervalometer options in camera - up to 8K is possible and the use of silent, electronic shutter for shooting timelapses - avoiding wearing out the shutter mechanism if you frequently like or plan to use the camera to shoot timelapses. You can also create 4K time lapse video in camera.
The body looks like a grown up D500 - offering a 3.2” tilting TOUCH screen. Dual card slots- one is the fast XQD and the second is a standard SD slot. Mic and headphone jack. Updated Snapbridge for control and sharing of images. Nikon also offers a more robust Wifi adapter for faster transfer - useful for serious sports photographers sharing images immediately from events. The D850 also offers illuminated buttons, like the D500. As someone that has just return from teaching an astrophotography workshop in Joshua Tree - I love the softly lit buttons, it just makes the camera that much easier to operate in low light conditions.
Shipping Sept 7th for 3296 bucks - preorders are live now at B&H Photo - if you plan to preorder I ask that you use the links, it costs you nothing extra and supports what we do here at Photorec.tv. What do you think about the D850 - It certainly seems like a solid upgrade from the D810, providing a host of options that will make this camera capable in a vareity of situations. What feature or features would you like to see added? What would you pick - Canon 5D Mark IV or Nikon D850 or the Sony a7RIII :) whatever that may bring.
