The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is here, and it’s a hit, showing players are more than happy to make return trips to some of Bethesda’s older open worlds, in case that wasn’t readily apparent based on how many people bought Skyrim more than once. But this is good news! Bethesda Game Studios’ last original open-world RPG outing was Starfield, which was certainly ambitious, but didn’t quite have players over the moon with joy. Before that was Fallout 76, which has since sorted itself out, but only after a very rough launch. The Elder Scrolls VI is still years away, and Fallout 5 even further out than that, so perhaps more remakes like Oblivion are the answer to stoke the fires of Bethesda fandom, and help build anticipation for the next installments in these storied series. A Fallout 3 Remake (or remaster) has been all-but-confirmed, and if that’s possible, an overhauled New Vegas would be welcomed with open arms. Meanwhile, giving The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind a remaster of the same quality as Oblivion would be a major undertaking, so what’re the alternatives?
