One of the big draws in getting a smart watch is being able to see all of your smartphone notifications with a quick glance at your wrist instead of having to take your phone out of your pocket. Personally, I'm still not sold on the utility of this concept, but it does seem to be getting some traction and there are numerous new smart watch models coming out that all do different things in different ways. I recently found a new smart watch manufacturer at a press event that I hadn't heard of before. Martian Watches is making a new smart watch called the Martian Notifier that combines an analog wristwatch with a small screen that shows all sorts of notifications. The "normal" watch design means that it doesn't look like a smart watch. It's not a big blank honker hanging on your wrist when the screen shuts off... you can always see the time.

The smart part is a little screen at the bottom that shows notifications from just about any app on your Android or iOS phone (with the Martian Notifier app installed). There's no need for developers to tap into a special software development kit, the Martian software detects anything that you've configured to display notifications on your phone and then lists those apps in the Martian Watch app. From there, you can actually configure different vibration signals for different notifications. You could make emails vibrate with 3 pulses, for example, while other notifications may vibrate with just one pulse. That way you'll have some indication as to what kind of notification just happened without even having to look at your wrist.

The Martian Notifier also supports activating Siri on an iPhone as well as remote triggering of the camera shutter. That means you can set your phone up somewhere, then stand in front of the camera and press the button on your watch to start a countdown timer to take a picture or just trigger the photo directly. The battery life is about 5-6 days and it can be recharged by MicroUSB (just like most smartphones). The watch will be available this summer for $129 and replacement wristbands will be about $20.
