The Returning Citizen is a podcast and resource for people coming out of prison and their families — sharing stories, connecting resources, and building community. Podcast hosts Imani Mixon and Jacob Smith lead a conversation on how education is creating opportunities for ex-offenders. Guests in the conversation are:
Erik Burgess is an entrepreneur dedicated to assisting ex-offenders in Detroit and beyond, a passion that was spurred during the 18 years he spent in the Michigan prison system for a nonviolent drug crime.
Karlos L. Harris is the co-owner and COO of Detroit School for Digital Technology in Southwest Detroit. He is also the Founder of Koded Icons, a digital marketing agency in Detroit that serves and educates entrepreneurs and small to mid-size businesses. Karlos has spent 11 total years in prison.
Michelle Smart is the Founder of Bags to Butterflies, a Detroit-based social enterprise that reaches out to women re-entering the community from prison.
Aaron Kinzel is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Professor Kinzel's passion for these issues arose from growing up in a life of crime and being locked up in multiple juvenile detention facilities and spent over a decade in adult correctional facilities.
