It makes you warm during summer and it lights up the sky during long winter days. We never think about the Sun as of something rare and usually take it for granted. Smart is the New Sexy decided to put some thought on the matter and speculate about the Sun’s value in our life. In this video, we’ll tell you what will happen if the Sun disappears for a minute, a day or a week.
If we count all the energy from the Sun that reaches our planet every day we’ll get the energy equivalent to 170 trillion kilowatts (170,000,000,000,000,000,000).

The Sun itself disburses two billion times as much energy that can guarantee the humanity a good life until we get bored and start another war. Its total energy of 1 second equals 100 billion hydrogen bombs. However, the Sun is not an infinite source of energy, it means that it loses its mass by producing such a huge amount of energy. The Sun is slowly burning out, guys. Thanks to its huge mass it’s not going to happen anytime soon, not for another 5 billion years. If the Sun were the mass of Venus, for example, it would burn out in 60,000 years.

So, let’s consider the possibility that the Sun might be just turned off for some time without explosions or other destructive consequences for its surroundings. A minute or two for example. What would happen to us then? Let's find the answer in the video!
