Today we wanted to show you guys a Kickstarter project for a device that you keep in your pocket, and generates energy to charge your phone just from your own movement. It’s called AMPY, and we like this idea a lot for several reasons. It cuts down on electricity use, it encourages you to move your lazy bum in order to charge it, and for longer camping or backpacking expeditions, it could literally end up saving your life.

Curious about how it actually performs? You’re going to be looking at 3 hours worth of phone charge time for a day of walking about, an hour of cycling, or 30 minutes of running. AMPY comes with a strap so that you can put it on your leg or arm when you’re exercising, but you can always just keep it in your pocket the rest of the time. AMPY will collect data on how much energy is generated from your moving around in the form of daily and weekly totals, and it will tell you how many calories you’ve burned as well.

AMPY isn’t exactly cheap - it will cost you $85 to own one of the first editions when they ship in June of 2015, but we’ll leave it to you guys to determine if it’s worth the price or not.

Pre-order AMPY on Kickstarter.
