There are many foods out there that get a lot of flattering, effusive press they don't necessarily deserve.

Here are 10 truly overrated edibles.

Number 10. Cupcakes. It remains a mystery to many how these dry, over-frosted cake-wannabes became such a big trend. It seems American consumers, possibly sick of brushing crumbs off of their shirts and icing from their faces, are finally rethinking their fondness for the desert. In 2013, cupcake sales took a significant nosedive.

Number 9. Pretzels. Eating hard pretzels isn't good for the taste buds or the teeth. In addition to being one of the leading food causes of cracks and breaks, chewing on them produces lactic acid, which dissolves enamel.

Number 8. Mustard. Aficionados can defend the condiment all they want, but America has spoken. According to recent tallies, people prefer pretty much any topper that isn't mustard. Mayonnaise, ketchup, soy sauce, and hot sauce are all what people reach for more often.

Number 7. Every restaurant worth its salt serves up sliders these days. Sadly, those little buns and their offerings tend to arrive dried out, masked by a gloopy sauce and without enough room for much more than a token lettuce leaf.

Number 6. Potato salad with its unevenly cooked chunks of either mushy or too firm potatoes, all bound together by a bland mayonnaise with perhaps a bit of diced onion for flavoring. Why this relic still appears on picnic tables and potlucks, usually in the hot summer sun, is baffling.

Number 5. Energy bars. For all of the sugar and fat packed into a lot energy bars, you may as well just have a handful of chocolate.

Number 4. Fancy Salads. Putting ranch dressing, cheese, eggs, ham, and croutons on top of lettuce doesn't make it a light lunch. In fact, Taco Bell's Fiesta Salad is one of the restaurant's highest calorie options.

Number 3. Frozen Yogurt. The frozen dairy option may have fewer calories than ice cream, but it typically has the same amount of sugar. Start adding toppings and before you know it, a big, creamy scoop of rocky road would have been the wiser choice.

Number 2. Bacon Brownies. Sounds great in theory, but getting the exact combination is apparently a rare skill. If they're prepared by anyone less than a brownie master, all one will taste is disappointment with a dash of despair.

And Number 1 is Pizza. Ok so it has its share of die hard fans. And It's great if the crust is just right and the toppings are tasty. But most often what you end up with is a piece of floppy baked dough with greasy cheese, too much red sauce and the toppings sliding back onto your plate.

What food would you like to see disappear off the culinary landscape?
