Number 10. Extensive face transplant. In August, surgeons in New York performed the most detailed face transplant to date. The patient, a volunteer fireman who suffered extensive burns on the job, had lost his eyelids, lips, and much of his nose. Doctors restored them all. 
Number 9. Separation of conjoined twins. The two girls were born attached at the pelvic region. To ensure each child emerged fully functioning, surgeons carefully disconnected the spinal cords and muscles. Constructive procedures were performed as well, including the building of anal openings, as neither had been born with one. 
Number 8. Saving a badly burned hand. In the case of one Texas cattleman, the heat-related injuries were so severe that repairing the damage required creating a new blood supply. Medical experts attached the man’s hand under the flesh of his own stomach as a means of spurring that growth, and the method worked. 
Number 7. Bionic eye implantation. After receiving the Argus II vision aid, a British patient suffering from dry Age Related Macular Degeneration, a historically untreatable loss of vision, was able to once again make out various forms. He could even do so with his eyes closed. 
Number 6. 3D printed practice model. Sensitive reconstructive surgeries often don’t allow for even the smallest error. Prior to operating on a 2-year-old girl who had been born with a rare facial bone disorder, surgeons printed an exact model of her face, allowing them to perfect their movements and plans in advance.
Number 5. Infant heart transplant. When the child was still in the womb, doctors spotted a problem with the unborn baby’s pulmonary valve. Though they weren’t expecting to perform a transplant, soon after the boy’s birth they determined the procedure was the only hope. At 23 days old, the newborn was given a new strawberry-sized heart.
Number 4. Bilateral Arm Transplant. A man who had lost his arms and legs to an aggressive staff infection received two new limbs at the same time. Attaching the appendages involved a 9-hour operation and a team of 35 professionals. The recipient said he looked forward to embracing his niece. 
Number 3. Extraction of over 230 teeth. That is from a single person, and all of them were growing out of one molar. Some were as small as a mustard grain, but others had grown to almost normal size. The complete removal took about 7 hours. 
Number 2. Recreating a lost ear. When the female patient was young, she was attacked by a raccoon and lost her ear as a result. About a decade later, surgeons extracted cartilage from her ribs, formed the frame, and implanted it in her arm to grow. The new ear was eventually attached in the appropriate place. 
Number 1. Head rebuilding. A UK man experienced a 25-foot fall, during which his head hit a brick wall. The collision dented his skull, making the cranial area appear misshapen. Specialists successfully implanted metal plates and fat extracted from his abdomen to restore his head to pre-accident form.
