At the highest end of the SUV spectrum sit some seriously expensive SUVs. No, we’re not talking about the ludicrous Karlmann King, based on a Ford F-550 and priced so high – $2.5 million – that you know no more than a handful will be built.
Nor are we talking about the upcoming Aston Martin DBX, which will cost approximately $250,000 when, or if, it gets built in 2020.
We are listing SUVs currently confirmed for mass production — those that can debit the highest sums from your account today. All prices are approximate CDN funds before taxes and fees.

10: Cadillac Escalade Platinum: $109,085

A 420-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 enables the full-sized sport-ute from GM to accelerate to 100 km/h in six seconds. Real wood trim blends with premium cut-and-sewn materials and suede accents, along with ambient lighting, as standard equipment for the seven-passenger Escalade.

9: Lexus LX 570: $109,600

The body-on-frame Lexus LX 570 shares an engine with the Toyota Tundra pickup — a 5.7-litre V8 producing 383 horsepower and 90 per cent of its 403 lb-ft peak torque at just 3,600 rpm. Boasting a 7,000-pound towing capacity, the big SUV comes only in one fully-equipped model that can seat up to eight, but it’s as luxurious as a Lexus can get, albeit the slowest on this list with a zero to 100 km/h time of 7.5 seconds.

8: BMW X6 M: $114,700

The coming BMW X7 will likely end up costing more than the X6 M – especially if it comes as an M – but we don’t know pricing on X7 just yet, so this is as near as we get. It rings in just under $115,000. For that amount of currency, drivers get a turbocharged V8 good for 567 horsepower and a zero-to-100 km sprint of 4.2 seconds. M-specific xDrive and 21-inch wheels are standard.

7: Mercedes-AMG GLS 63: $136,200

Another lightning fast and big SUV – capable of hitting 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds – the GLS is the largest of Mercedes’ SUVs. Powered by a 5.5-litre AMG V8 biturbo producing 577 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque, it’s quick enough to please all seven passengers.

6: Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: $182,600

The sports cars of SUVs, the Cayenne Turbo S sits at the top of the Cayenne range in price, luxury and performance. A 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 520 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque means getting to 100 km/h requires no more than 4.1 seconds — much faster than a G-Wagen for less money, but the same as the Bentley Bentayga that costs more.

5: Lamborghini Urus: $232,000

With 2018 versions already sold out despite its $232,000 (to start) price tag, Urus buyers will have to wait for the 2019 version coming this fall. Still, it will be worth the wait: The Urus’ 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (no V12 or V10, sorry) with 650 horsepower means acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and zero-to-200 in 12.8 seconds — almost as fast as a Porsche GT3.

4: Mercedes-Benz AMG G 65: $252,000

An all new G-Wagen, looking much like the departing G, is just around the corner, but the existing big box of SUVs is fast enough to satisfy those with the highest needs for speed, with an acceleration figure of 5.3 seconds from zero-to-100 thanks to its hand-built, 6.0-litre V12 biturbo producing 621 horsepower.

3: Range Rover SVAutobiography: $270,000

With off-road capability as good as many Jeeps, plus a 557-horsepower supercharged 5.0-litre V8 capable of zero to 100 km/h in just over five seconds, the long-wheelbase SV Range Rover has a rear seat described as “a sanctuary for relaxation that doubles as a mobile tech hub” for monitoring the stocks that will help pay for it.

2: Bentley Bentayga Black Edition: $390,000

A 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 making 600 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque that returns zero-to-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds will erase any thoughts about the Bentley’s return on investment. Starting at about $250,000, the Bentayga also comes in a Black Edition. Full-time AWD, five skid plates, air suspension and much more are standard.

1: Rolls Royce Cullinan: $425,000

Named after the diamond in Britain’s Crown Jewels, the Cullinan will cost about $425,000 when it arrives in Canada next year as a 2019 model. Its 6.7-litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing 563 horsepower will also trigger the federal government’s fuel tax, though the SUV’s “magic air ride” suspension might make you forget how much it costs to be transported in the highest level of Grey-Poupon luxury.
