We just got our first look at the completely reimagined 2020 Ford Escape redesign, and the changes are so comprehensive that we don't think we could have identified this new compact SUV contender if all the badges were removed before this reveal event. You'll see what it looks like inside and out, and we'll share with you what we learned about its new powertrains, interior features and cargo-carrying capability.

The redesigned Escape is hardly recognizable because its new bodywork is much smoother and sleeker. That's because it's over 2 inches longer and a little more than 1.5 inches wider, and yet it stands a quarter-inch shorter. These larger dimensions enclose a more spacious and attractive interior that features class-leading rear legroom and a slide-and-recline rear seat. Drivers also benefit from a full suite of active safety features, and most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with a Sync 3 infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are four powertrains. Most will have a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is optional on the top-level Titanium. The Escape hybrid returns in two varieties: a regular gasoline hybrid and a new plug-in hybrid that Ford says will go 30 miles on electricity alone. Ford has not yet released any fuel economy estimates.

2020 Ford Escape Release Date:
Expect the 2020 Ford Escape to arrive in dealer showrooms early this fall, but the plug-in hybrid version will arrive about six months later, in spring 2020.
