The 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan Looks Like a Genuinely Fun Economy Four-Door
It's basically the sedan version of the Corolla hatch we like so much, with a trunk and—yes—an available six-speed manual.
For the past decade or so, Toyota has focused on building reliable yet forgettable vehicles. Lately, though, it seems the company is starting to pay attention to the driving experience again. The Europe-only Yaris GRMN seems like a riot; the upcoming fifth-gen Supra is a genuine sports car. And the stick-shift Corolla hatchback we recently drove is economy car fun from the old school playbook. Now Toyota has just unveiled a sedan version of this new Corolla, and it looks like another step in the right direction.
The 2020 Corolla sedan is essentially a four-door version of the 2019 Corolla hatch, sharing that car's design cues, underpinnings and drivetrain. Looks-wise, it's similar to the hatch up front, with an angry, pointy fascia, gaping grille and sharp headlights. The rear, of course, is totally different, with a small diffuser and a dual-exit exhaust that, unlike the hatchback's, isn't a decoy. The inside is pure Corolla, with a smartly laid-out dash and tech like WiFi and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
The car will come in five trims: L, LE, XLE, XSE, and SE. That seems like a lot, but here's all you really need to know: The first three trims come with a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated inline-four shared with the last-gen Corolla, connected exclusively to a CVT transmission equipped with a physical first gear. The XSE and SE can be had with a new 2.0-liter engine making 169 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Most importantly, you can get this 2.0-liter engine with a real, actual six-speed manual transmission. Economy-minded enthusiasts, rejoice!
Pricing for the 2020 Corolla sedan has yet to be announced, but our colleagues over at Car and Driver estimate it'll start at somewhere around $20,000, and could surpass $25,000 depending on options and trim level. Toyota says the car will be available in US dealerships starting in spring 2019. We have a feeling it'll be just as much fun as the Corolla hatchback that we review in the video below.
