The Volkswagen Golf GTI helped popularize the hot hatch concept when it arrived in the U.S. decades ago. Now, some 45 years later, the GTI is still going strong, even if hatchbacks aren't quite as popular as they once were. Redesigned for 2022, the VW GTI offers drivers a balance of performance, comfort and utility. In this video, Reese Counts from Edmunds brings you all you need to know about the newly redesigned GTI. From the fresh new look to the overhauled interior, Reese details what's new and what we like and don't like about the Golf GTI. This is our review of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Performance is a primary feature that sets a hot hatch apart from a standard hatchback. For 2022, Volkswagen increased the GTI's output to 242 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque (the previous engine made 228 hp and 258 lb-ft). Besides a more powerful engine, the revised suspension makes the new GTI much more performance-oriented than the previous model. To top it all off, the GTI comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission.
If you think the exterior of the Golf GTI looks clean and modern, then the redesigned interior will be sure to impress and then frustrate. The sleek new dashboard design is highlighted by two large display screens. The layout looks very impressive, but the lack of buttons makes the GTI difficult to interact with when you're driving.
Aside from the interior annoyances, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is everything you've come to expect from one of the best hot hatches available. It's comfortable and practical, and it delivers the kind of on-road performance you'd expect from a hot hatch. This is the 2022 VW Golf GTI review.
