BETTER Steering Than A GT3 - The 2025 Porsche Carrera T

It’s hard to argue with a Porsche 911. Even though the new, manual-only, base-engined Carrera T now costs what a 911 GT3 once did, the increased price brings with it performance reminiscent of older GT3 models. Porsche has a special knack for charging more while offering less—intentionally. The Carrera T comes with a smaller engine, an old-school manual transmission, and some lightweight components, yet it can cost as much as a 911 boasting 100 more horsepower. But focusing on that would miss the essence of the Carrera T.

In a brief eight-hour window with the new 992.2 Carrera T—mostly dedicated to filming for a YouTube review—the spec sheet already hinted at promise: 388 horsepower from a refreshed 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six, equipped with 992.1 Carrera GTS turbos. It features brakes from the 992.1 Carrera S, and suspension borrowed from the 992.1 GTS. But perhaps the most enticing detail? A so-called holy grail: a six-speed manual transmission said to include the 911 GT3's shifter linkage.

However, this wasn’t a true six-speed—it was the often-criticized seven-speed manual with one gear removed. The seven-speed has long drawn criticism for imprecise shifts and ambiguous gate positioning, complaints that many didn’t personally experience, yet it remained less satisfying than the six-speed used in the 997 and 987 Cayman. All of these systems are cable-shifted, meaning the overall feel is dictated by the shifter box and cables themselves.

As it turns out, removing a gear and swapping in the GT3’s full shifter assembly transforms the experience. It’s an upgrade that works like magic. The full breakdown and driving impressions are available in the video above.
