As far as masculine jobs go, few can compete with being a fighter jet test pilot. Other gigs, like oil rigging and crab fishing, have definite risks, but most jobs don't require you to willingly come as close to death as possible in order to make sure that your equipment is working the way it should.

And yet, that's exactly what Billie Flynn has been doing with a smile for over a decade as a test pilot for Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jets. Prior to that, this career pilot flew with the Canadian Armed forces for 23 years. And yet, despite being confronted with the very real possibility of death countless times, Flynn was unbelievably laid-back and upbeat when we talked with him.

It must be the training these guys go through that gives them this cool confidence. Test pilots require an intimate, exhaustive knowledge of the planes they fly, both as a means of diminishing the chance of crashing, but also to be able to identify any minor hiccups that need to be addressed before the planes can be deployed in missions. The brave pilots who take on this challenge need to know how to keep cool under pressure. Flynn admits to being in several chaotic close calls, but seems unfazed by it. If anything, his love of flying gives him the courage to keep climbing back in the cockpit of untested fighter jets.

And it's a good thing there are people brave enough to do this job, since computer simulations alone can't rule out every possible malfunction that could occur with a multi-million-dollar jet.

So year after year, flight after flight, Flynn puts his mind and body through the unimaginable stress of oppressive G forces and the pressure of making it to the edge of what's possible before returning safely home, eager for the next test flight.

It just goes to show, there are people who like to think of themselves as "adrenaline junkies" because they completed a Tough Mudder or jumped out of an airplane -- and then there are guys like Billie Flynn.
