Meet the all-electric G-Class!

Mercedes has finally unveiled the all-electric G580. The question is, does this all-electric G-Class ruin the heritage of this world-renowned off-roader?

For starters, let’s check out the design. Thankfully, the biggest changes are under the skin, so this all-new G retains its predecessor's classic boxy shape. Up front, there’s an updated grille design, coupled with an updated lower bumper. You still get trim that runs across the side of the car, although in this electric edition it comes with a little blue stripe included! Around the back, there’s an updated rear bumper, and on the back door, what once held a spare wheel now holds the charging cables!

Step inside and the G580 is just as stylish and well-built as those that came before it. There are soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout, and the seats are super comfortable. The 580 comes with a new steering wheel, updated infotainment and digital dial screens, along with a number of other updates in the centre console and across the dash.

When it comes to performance, there are a number of options to run through. For those not wanting to go fully electric, there’s a 3-litre diesel and a 3-litre straight-six turbo petrol, and these deliver 367hp and 449hp respectively. Meanwhile, the AMG G63 delivers 585hp, and all cars are equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox.

As for the G580, it comes with an incredible four electric motors, and these combine to produce 587hp and an eye-watering 1,164Nm! So there’s loads of power, but because it weighs over 3 tonnes, it still takes 4.7 seconds to hit 60mph.

The entry-level diesel G-Class starts at £136,000, the all-electric G580 starts at around £160,000, and the most powerful AMG G63 costs around £185,000. With that in mind, should you choose the all-electric G580 over the G63?! You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!
