The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a new electric midsize SUV. It represents the latest offering from Hyundai's ever-increasing EV lineup. In this video, Mark Takahashi brings you a first look at the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, explaining what we know so far about Hyundai's latest electric SUV. Mark explains what we like, what we don't like, and when we can expect to see the Ioniq 5 on sale. This is our 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 First Look.
Hyundai has big plans for the Ioniq name. Much like how Genesis became a luxury brand, Hyundai will use the Ioniq name on several upcoming electric vehicles. The first of these EVs is the Ioniq 5 SUV, which will be followed by the Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan in 2022 and the larger Ioniq 7 SUV in 2024. Like most midsize SUVs, the Ioniq 5 seats five passengers and is similar in size to the Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. A longer wheelbase and a fastback-style rear hatchback help give the Ioniq 5 a more sporty profile than most competitors.
Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 in two battery sizes: 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh. Equipped with the larger battery and rear-wheel drive, the Ioniq 5 offers up to 300 miles of range. Additionally, Hyundai says the 0-60 mph acceleration in the bigger-battery Ioniq is in the low 5-second range. That's not far off the Tesla Model Y Long Range's 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds.
With the release of the Ioniq 5, along with multiple electric vehicles lined up for the next few years, Hyundai's commitment to electric vehicles is clear. The brand aims to be a big player in the EV market for years to come, and the Ioniq 5 looks like another step in that direction. While we weren't able to test-drive the Ioniq 5 just yet, we are confident it has the power, smarts and capabilities to stack up against other electric SUVs. This is our first look at the new all-electric 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5.
