The MCU’s Phase 4 was full of highs and lows. Naturally, following Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Phase 4 was a reset. With the new Disney+ streaming shows (WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), we got to meet and know more characters in a shorter amount of time compared to features. Phase 4 still had its anchoring feature films (Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), but many criticized the lack of active plot for the larger MCU. But also… the Special Presentations (Werewolf by Night, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special) were so much fun!

This defense of the divisive Phase 4 (not that Marvel needs it) looks at how Marvel Studios is subtly laying the thematic groundwork for the Multiverse Saga through recurring motifs across Phase 4’s movies, TV shows, and TV specials - acknowledging its own narrative in the process.
