John Ioannidis, "Reproducible Research: True or False?"

John P.A. Ioannidis, MD, DSc, is a Professor of Medicine, Health Research and Policy, and Statistics at Stanford University. He is also the founding Director of the just-launched Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS)

John's talk will discuss empirical evidence about the current status of scientific information in regards to challenges of replicating and reproducing research findings produced by over 15 million publishing scientists around the world. There is substantial evidence that many adopted popular research processes are inefficient, and estimates of wasted resources are very high (e.g. 85% in biomedical research at large). The talk will also discuss some of the many ideas that have been proposed about how to improve reproducibility and research efficiency, including, but not limited to, realignment of incentives and rewards in research, sharing of information, registration of studies, enhancement of the replication culture, improved and efficient analytical and statistical methods, and adjustment to more realistic expectations about the results obtained from single studies versus larger collections of data.
