You wouldn't be alone if you were expecting a crossover slotted between the Mazda CX-3Opens in New Window and CX-5Opens in New Window to be called the CX-4, but that is surprisingly not the case. Since there's already a CX-4 in China, Mazda'sOpens in New Window all-new compact crossover for Europe and North America is called the CX-30 and it looks like it's heavily based on the all-new Mazda3Opens in New Window compact that debuted last year.

What Is It?
As we mentioned earlier, in terms of sizing, the new CX-30 is positioned squarely between the subcompact CX-3 and the compact CX-5. That makes it a little unclear which crossovers this is competing with, but entries like the Nissan Rogue SportOpens in New Window and the Jeep CompassOpens in New Window come to mind.
Along with its structural similarities to the all-new Mazda3, the new CX-30 looks like it will have a very similar interior and similar equipment available as the new compact with which it shares a platform. That means a well-designed, premium-looking interior with comfortable seats and hopefully a generous host of standard and available tech.

We don't have any official info on which engine(s) will power the CX-30, but we think a safe guess for the base engine would be the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This setup makes 186 horsepower in the Mazda3 and we'd expect similar performance numbers in the CX-30.

We have our fingers crossed that the new compression-ignition Skyactiv-X engine, which is a gas engine that promises to deliver diesel like torque and efficiency is in the cards for this new crossover. What we do know about the mechanical details of the Mazda CX-30 is that front-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be optional.

Sleek and Bold
We had a chance to speak with a couple MazdaOpens in New Window representatives at the Geneva Motor Show about the CX-30 and they had some interesting things to say about the new crossover. "The look of the CX-30 is both sleek and bold," chief designer Ryo Yanagisawa said. "The upper body has a sleek look while the lower body says 'bold'" We think bold and sleek is a good way to describe the aesthetic of the CX-30.

"The CX-30 is not replacing an existing crossover vehicle," product program manager Naohito Saga said of the CX-30's position in the Mazda lineup. "It fills the gap between CX-3 and CX-5 but still has that 'oneness' between driver and car that Mazda is known for. The CX-30 focuses specifically on maneuverability and handling, comfort and spaciousness and an attractive exterior design."

Pricing and Availability
As of this writing, pricing is unknown for the Mazda CX-30, but we expect it to start in the low $20k range in the U.S. to keep it slotted between the CX-3 and the CX-5. It will be available in Europe later this year and it's coming to the U.S. in early 2020. We've been very impressed with Mazda crossovers lately and we're looking forward to what this all-new model will bring to the brand's growing lineup.
