UPDATE - after another couple of weeks, I finally heard back that the local team "found no damage", and they have shipped the lens to the Quality Assurance team for further assessment. Meanwhile I continue to hear from you guys who have experienced the same issue.
Note - as an NPS member, I was offered a loaner 70-200 whilst this process is ongoing.
