At the heart of the Pentax K-3 is an all-new 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor that's manufactured by Sony. The interesting news here is that it lacks an Anti-alaising
filter, much like the Pentax K-5 IIS to ensure maximum detail is recorded, but
there's an AA simulator mode that can be switched on or off by the user to
control the effects of moiré patterning.

The way in which it works is that applies microscopic vibrations to the image sensor at the sub pixel level during image exposure to generate the same level of moiré-reduction as an optical anti-aliasing filter. The K-3 is the first DSLR's to offer such a function, so it's going to be very interesting to find out how effective this AA simulator mode is on test. Not forgetting ISO, the K-3's sensitivity range runs between ISO 100 at the low end and ISO 51,200 at the high end.

Beside its new sensor is Pentax's Prime III Image Engine Processor, and it's this
that allows the K-3 to shoot a burst at up to 8.3fps -- making it faster than two of its key rivals in the market -- the Canon 70D and Nikon D7100. Also included is a new RGB light-metering sensor with approximately 86,000 dots that's claimed to enhance exposure accuracy. Other interesting features include a newly designed SAFOX AF module, which provides 27 AF points, 25 of these being the highly sensitive cross-type. The middle sensor and two sensor just above and below it are also designed to
detect the light flux of an f/2.8 lens. Turning to the viewfinder, this has also been redesigned with new eyepiece optics to assure a 0.95x magnification and 100% coverage.

Much like previous Pentax DSLRs, the K-3's body is constructed of magnesium alloy to give it a tough aesthetic. Not only is it rugged, it's designed so that it's fully weather sealed, making it ideal for those who'd like to continue to shoot in the most demanding of weather conditions and ties in with the twelve weather sealed lenses that Pentax currently offer. As many as 92 weather seals have gone into the K-3's construction and the protective cover for the LCD is made from tempered glass. On the subject of the screen, it has a 3.2in, 3:2 aspect air-gapless display that boasts a 1.3 million dot resolution, however sadly it's not the vari-angle type and remains fixed.

Supporting full HD video in the MPEG-4 format at 60i or 30p, a useful addition for movie shooters will be the 3.5mm headphone port at the side to monitor audio levels. In addition to this, there's a pair of SD card slots at the side. Although the K-3 doesn't feature Wi-fi functionality built-in, Pentax are to produce what are better known as Flu-cards to enable users to transmit images and control the camera remotely from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Flu cards will only work in the K-3's SD slot 2 however.

In addition to the K-3, Pentax have produced a fully weather sealed DGB-5 battery grip for the camera to increase shooting stamina, while the camera body has a durability of 200,000 shutter cycles and uses the same battery as used by the K-5II and K-5IIS. Speaking of the K-5II and K-5IIS, both of these models are due to be repositioned in price with the launch of the K-3.
