Orson Welles was one of the Hollywood "originals," and his masterpiece Citizen Kane held audiences' attentions for newly two hours -- and then pulled the rug out from under them. The entire film was a journey to find out what Kane's final word, "Rosebud," meant -- and then we find out it was his childhood sled.

The twist was so elegant and simple at the same time that it worked on a number of levels and became as much a part of film history as the movie itself. That's impressive in its own right and something incredibly rare in present-day cinema.
