Statistics about how alcohol consumption relates to intelligence reveal that smarter people tend to drink more.

Statistics about how alcohol consumption relates to intelligence reveal that smarter people tend to drink more.

One statistic from the United States Department of Health says that 68 point 4 percent of college graduates are regular drinkers, compared with 35 point 2 percent of people who drink regularly but never graduated from high school.

Another study compared all the babies born in the UK during a week in March of 1958.

The results of that study, which tracked the subjects for 50 years, show that children who scored higher on an IQ test also reportedly drank more on a regular basis later in life than subjects with a lower IQ.

According to research done by scientists at the London School of Economics, women with a college degree were 86 percent more likely to drink most days than women participating in the study who hadn't graduated from high school.

Researchers proposed several possible reasons behind the results including "a more intensive social life that encourages alcohol intake... more exposure to alcohol use during formative years...and greater postponement of childbearing and its responsibilities among the better educated."

Yet another study, this time of Danish men, found that respondents who drink wine are smarter than those who choose to drink beer.
