What are WLTP and RDE?

From 1 September 2018, new cars could become around 20% less efficient overnight.

OK, not exactly. But if you’re looking at getting a new car, you need to know about a change in the way fuel economies are measured, which could make a previously economical car seem much less so.

This is all due to a change in the law that aims to make official claims about a car’s fuel economy more realistic to actual use on the road.

The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (known as WLTP) will be brought in for all new cars registered from 1 September 2018, and the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) test will compulsory for all cars on sale from 1 September 2019.
