2017 Audi A4: What You Need to Know

The redesigned 2017 Audi A4 is among the elite in our luxury small car rankings. According to our analysis of professional reviews and data, critics love the A4's chic interior, its many tech features, and its spacious rear seats. They also note that it's a capable driving machine, making it an excellent blend of performance and comfort.
The A4 is one of the more expensive cars in the class but still costs less than some of its other highly ranked classmates. The A4's base trim starts at $37,300, and the highest of its three trims has a starting price of $45,900. Beyond that, there are several option packages and available features to choose from. A fully loaded A4 has a price tag in the mid-$50,000s.

A4 Interior
Swanky Interior
The A4 is redesigned for the 2017 model year, which brings a lot of changes. One thing that hasn't changed is the level of quality throughout the interior. The A4's cabin is arguably the nicest in the class and features plenty of quality materials and stylish design. The seats come standard with leather upholstery, which is just an optional feature in many class rivals.

Speaking of the seats, you'll appreciate the all-day comfort they provide. The front seats are fairly roomy and afford the driver plenty of visibility. The rear seats, too, have a good amount of space. In fact, the A4's rear seats offer more room than most of its classmates'. They also feature two complete sets of easy-to-reach LATCH connectors and a tether anchor for the middle seat.

Similarly, the trunk has an above-average amount of space. This is still a small car, so don't expect to move furniture, but the A4's trunk affords you enough room to stow a few golf bags or your luggage ahead of a weekend trip.
Plenty of Tech Features
If tech features are important to you, the A4 shouldn’t disappoint. It comes standard with several luxury features like tri-zone automatic climate control and a power sunroof. It adds USB ports this year, and the standard MMI infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Available features include a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system, HD Radio, and satellite radio, giving audiophiles plenty to love. Audi Connect with a Wi-Fi hot spot is available, so you can connect your favorite devices to the internet while you're on the road. There's also an upgraded MMI system with navigation, and MMI touch with handwriting recognition allows you to write on the screen with your finger.

The standard MMI system is already nice, but the upgraded version makes controlling in-vehicle functions even easier. The handwriting feature makes it incredibly easy to enter destinations into the navigation, and it's also convenient if you're trying to search for nearby points of interest.
A4 Performance
Solid Engine Lineup

Drivers looking for a variety of engine choices may be disappointed to learn that the A4 only offers one engine beyond the base turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, that disappointment will likely fade once you drive it. The turbo-four has enough power for any driving situation, and it delivers punchy acceleration around town and on the highway. It gets average fuel economy for the class, earning an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The performance-oriented S4 is the alternative for drivers who want to go fast. It features a supercharged V6 engine that produces 102 more horsepower than the A4's engine. Audi claims the S4 has a top speed of 155 mph and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
The redesigned A4 features a seven-speed automatic transmission that doesn't really stand out in a good or bad way. If it has a drawback, it's that it occasionally hesitates when you want more power.

Cushioned Ride, Capable Handling

While the performance is merely adequate for the class, the A4 generally provides a comfortable ride. Standard Audi Drive Select lets you fine-tune the ride and handling by selecting from four different driving modes that alter throttle response and other settings.
The A4 delivers a composed ride on winding roads. It has accurate steering and fairly nimble handling, though it doesn't have the athleticism of the BMW 3 Series or the Cadillac ATS. Available all-wheel drive gives you added road grip and improves the A4's performance in inclement weather.
