Since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957 and inaugurated the space age, humans have managed to send spacecraft near every planet in the solar system and to land on two planets and one moon. No landing has been attempted on any of the gaseous Jovian planets primarily because there is no surface on which to land. Sending a spacecraft flying through the atmosphere of one is also impractical for several reasons.
