It may surprise many to learn that a recent report published in USA TODAY showed inactivity, and specifically sitting is literally killing us.

In fact the risk of heart disease is more than double in men that sit for 5 or more hours per day. And what's worse is that the negative effects of prolonged sitting do not appear to be offset by vigorous exercise.

But here’s the great news… you can easily reverse the negative effects of sitting by standing. Even though it might sound too simple to be true the research shows that the least at risk are physically active men that sit for less than 2 hours daily,

So all you have to do is make sure that you intermittently stand up, even if it's at your desk, every 30 or ideally every 15 minutes.

Simply standing up has many substantial health benefits including increased blood flow, muscle oxygenation, postural benefits and more over the muscle contraction among your larger leg muscles stimulates the production of enzymes that help you break down fat in your blood.

To ensure that you don't forget to intermittently stand you might want to download a simple stopwatch app that will constantly remind you. We recommend Moves, Human, or the aptly named Stand Up!

Once standing, shake your arms and body and you can even do a few simple stretches such as holding your neck for 20 seconds on each side, a simple set of squats from your chair, or ideally take a quick stroll around the office and say hello to the new guy in accounting.

Again consistency is point here so set a goal you're comfortable with and stick with it!
