So the Sun slowly heats up and burns hydrogen inside its core. After about 5 billion years, the Sun will begin to develop into a bloated red giant. Its outer gas layer will swell, eventually absorbing the Earth as it reaches its maximum size and brightness after 7 billion years.
But long before that, 1.1 billion years from now, the Sun will be 11% brighter, raising the earth's average temperature by 50 °C (120 °F). This will heat the oceans so much that they can evaporate without boiling, like a pan of water left on a sun-drenched kitchen table.
For plants and animals will come hard times of adaptation to the greenhouse, although some single-celled organisms called Archaea will be able to survive. But only briefly. When the water vapor is in the atmosphere, ultraviolet light from the Sun will split the water molecules, and the hydrogen necessary for the structure of living cells will gradually dissipate into space. If our descendants – or other forms of intelligent life following us - want to survive, they will have to migrate somewhere.
