In his new book, The Orchid and the Dandelion, Professor Thomas Boyce, M.D., explores the ways in which different kinds of children -- from the most resilient to the most fragile -- can all flourish and thrive, and the conditions that are required for them to do so.

Boyce’s book is the result of four decades serving as a pediatrician specializing in child-development research. His research focused on the differing ways in which both genetic makeup and environment shape behavior -- for example, how certain variant genes can increase a person’s susceptibility to depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and antisocial, sociopathic, or violent behaviors. But rather than seeing this “risk” gene as a liability, Boyce has recast the way we think of human susceptibility, and will demonstrate that these previously-considered “bad” genes can, in the right environment, result in children who not only thrive, but exceed their peers.
