We ponder on the different space apocalypse scenarios a lot or think about living on other planets. However, we never think about our home planet. We think we know it well and nothing can surprise us here. We feel comfortable here. But what would happen to life on Earth if the planet suddenly grew in size and became twice as large? Smart is the New Sexy did some research, and here is what we found.

Earth's distance from the Sun is thought to be one of the key reasons why it is home to widespread life. Our planet occupies what scientists sometimes call the Goldilocks zone. Its distance from our star means it is neither too hot nor too cold to support liquid water - thought to be a key ingredient for life. Such habitable zones can be found in any solar system and might harbor life. Astronomers try very hard to determine Goldilocks zones in other galaxies and find out whether there’s life.

The idea isn't necessarily to find an exact match, but a close one. For example, astronomers have discovered several so-called "super-Earths" -- planets that are slightly larger than our home. Gliese 581g stands as a perfect example. It's about three times the mass of Earth.

They also found Kepler-22b that might be more hospitable. 22b is located 600 light-years away and orbits in the Goldilocks zone of a sun-like star. Astronomers believe the planet's radius is more than double that of Earth, but they haven't determined its composition.

What might it be like to live on such big planet? What if Earth were twice as big? Let’s imagine that it suddenly doubled in size and mass. If the Earth were twice as big its mass and volume would be 8 times bigger, and the surface area would be 2 times greater. Basically, there are 6 main things that will happen and influence the way of our lives.
