2020 Mercedes-Benz A 250 e Plug-In Hybrid Hatchback Packs 15.6-kWh Battery. lectrification is a big theme for this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and Daimler AG knows it all too well. The A 250 e from Mercedes-Benz promises between 60 and 68 kilometers (37 to 42 miles) of electric range as per the WLTP, coming courtesy of an e-motor and 15.6-kWh battery pack.
Also available in the guise of the B 250 e, the plug-in hybrid system works in conjunction with the 1.33-liter turbo four-cylinder that Daimler AG co-developed with Renault. On its own, the gasoline-fueled engine is rated at 158 horsepower (160 PS) and 184 pound-feet (250 Nm) of torque.

Only a dual-clutch transmission is offered, packing eight forward gears and model-specific software to maximize efficiency. The instantaneous torque also helps with acceleration, taking 6.6 seconds from naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) when you mean it and the launch conditions are perfect. Top speed comes as a surprise as well at 235 km/h (146 mph) while the A-Class Sedan in A 250 e flavor levels up to 240 km/h (149 mph). In EV mode, these two and the B 250 e are rated at 140 kilometers (87 mph) without any help from the gasoline engine.

Other than the badge at the rear, it’s hard to tell this fellow apart from an ICE-only member of the A-Class family. The only other indicator would be the charging port door on the right-hand side. Turning on the ignition also reveals a start-up screen with EQ branding in blue, so yeah, mad props to Mercedes-Benz for keeping the A 250 e as undercover as possible in this sea of obnoxious PHEVs.

The silver-painted car at the IAA 2019 is shod in 225/45 R18 tires from Pirelli. It’s the eco-friendly option from the Cinturato series, a tire that Pirelli describes as the company’s “first green performance tire.” All in all, it’s one of the better eco-conscious compounds and treads out there right now.

The A 250 e in hatchback and sedan guises as well as the B 250 e are just three of EQ Power-branded vehicles that Mercedes-Benz plans to launch by the end of 2020. Pricing starts at €36,943 for the five-door hatchback while the sedan is €37,300 and the MPV retails at €37,663 in Germany
