Canon 70D vs Canon 77D - Best Canon DSLR Under $1000
Hey whats up everyone, my names Chris Winter and in this video, I’m going to do a quick comparison between the brand new Canon 77D and the Canon 70D so you hopefully I can help you choose which one will be right for you.
So let’s start off this comparison by first taking a look at the overall build quality between these two cameras. Now the Canon 70d came out a few years ago but I’ve always appreciated how good it feels in the hand. This is actually my daily shooter and I’ve used it constantly for nearly 3 years now. It always feels solid and I’ve never had a problem with it’s build. But in saying that, it is a little bit heavy. I generally use the 70d for filming these days so i’m not lugging it around too much. On the other hand though, we have the 77D which to me does feel considerably lighter. Now the 77d is definitely not a small DSLR compared to cameras such as the Canon SL1, but it does feel like it would be a little bit easier to carry around on a day travelling. So if you’re looking for a camera that’s going to be easier to bring around, the 77D will be the one to get.
Burst Speed
So one difference between the Canon 77d and the Canon 70d is it’s burst speed. But it’s not a huge difference and in theory you might not even notice it. The Canon 70D is a quick shooter at 6.7frames per second. In my use over the years, thats been more than enough on most occasions. The 77D comes shoot at 6 frames per second. Is it a huge difference? Nope, not really. If you shoot a lot of action, say sports and wildlife, the 70d will be better for you. But if you don’t generally spray off a lot of shots in succession, then you’ll be fine with the 77d.
Shutter Speed
Now speaking about shooting action, another difference that the Canon 70d has compared to the 77D is it’s shutter speed. The Canon 70d tops out at 1/8000th of a second compared to 1/4000th of a second. If you like to shoot with wide apertures on bright days this could be a nice feature to have on the 70d.
Battery Life
Let’s quickly talk about battery life. The 70D uses these tried and tested LP-E6 batteries. These are awesome and I’ve bought heaps of them. But really I don’t use them all that much because the battery on the 70d is pretty great. I’ve actually been pretty impressed with the 77D’s battery life as well and it’s probably nothing you’ll have to worry about but in general I have found the battery life better on the 70D.
Megapixels
The Canon 77D also comes in with 24.2 megapixels, compared to just 20.2megapixels on the 70D. These days megapixels aren't as important as they used to be but if you do like to crop your images and keep them sharp, the 77d will be better at that.
Wifi & Bluetooth
One new addition to the Canon 77D is it’s inclusion of bluetooth connectivity. Both the 70d and the 77d have Wifi & NFC built in to help transfer photos and overall it works great. So much so that i haven’t really even needed to use the bluetooth on my 77d. So to me it’s not really a benefit, i guess it’s nice to have as a backup but i’ve really found that the wifi does work well so yep, that’s that.
Stabilisation
Now one nice feature on the Canon 77d it’s it’s new built in image stabilisation. Essentially this helps you get a steadier shot even when shooting without a lens with IS. That also means it does crop your image a little. How does it work though? Well pretty well and it’s a nice little feature to have on the 77d. If you do shoot a lot of video, this might be a feature that’ll push you over to the 77d.
Viewfinder
Let’s talk about the viewfinders on both of these cameras now. The Canon 70d has a pentaprism viewfinder compared to a pentamirror viewfinder on the 77d.
AF Points
Being a newer DSLR, the Canon 77d has a very nice upgrade to 45 autofocus points. That’s pretty impressive for a sub $1000 camera and really looks impressive compared to the 19 Af points on the 70d. These are cross type AF points as well, so if you’re looking for a fast and accurate autofocusing camera, the 77d will be for you.
As you can probably tell I have a spot in my heart for the Canon 70D. It’s been my daily shooter for nearly 3 years now and it’s a brilliant camera. But if I was to choose between these two today I’d probably go for the 77d.
They’re very similar cameras, with the 77d being a little smaller and that appeals to me especially for travel. On the other hand, If you like that extra size and battery life, go for the 70d.
