Canon 80D vs Canon 77D
Hey whats up everyone, my names Chris Winter and in this video, I’m going to do a quick comparison between the brand new Canon 77D and the Canon 80D so you hopefully I can help you choose which one will be right for you.
Size
So the first major difference between the Canon 77D and the 80D is the size of these two cameras. In the hand, the 80D feels like quite a larger body, almost feeling quite heavy in comparison to the 77D.
The 77D on the other hand is 190grams lighter and does feel a little bit more like a Rebel series camera, even though it’s not official part of the family.
So if you know you’re going to be travelling a lot with your DSLR, the 77D will probably be better especially if you pair it up with a light weight lens like the 18-55mm, 10-18 or the 50mm STM.
But on the other hand, if you need a really solid body, go for the 80D. If you’re know you’re going to be using heavy lenses like the 70-200, the 80D will feel better weighted I think.
Headphone Jack
One of the big physical differences between these two cameras is on the side.
And that’s the Canon 80D’s headphone jack and the 77D omittance of one.
Now if you shoot stills only, this isn’t going to affect you at all, but for video, this is defintiely something you’ll want to think about.
The camera before the 80d, the 70d, didn’t have a headphone jack and its something I’ve always missed as its my main shooter.
I was a little dissapointed that the 77d didn’t come with a headphone jack because I know that a lot of people will use this camera for filmmaking and monitoring your audio is a big deal.
So if you know that you’re going to be filming in situations where audio is criticual, the 80D has a upper hand with that.
Stablization
One really cool new feature on teh 77D that’s not in the 80D is it’s inclusion of in built stabilization.
This was introduced just this year and essentially helps get rid of the camera shake when hand holding your video.
Now one thing to note about it is that it is a digital image stabilization which does mean it will crop your image.
That’s in comparison to cmaeras like the Panasonic Gh5 which a pshyical image stabilization.
Eitehr way though, it’s deifnitely a nice feature to have because you can turn it on and off at the touch of a button.
So that’s a definite win for the 77D.
Burst Speed
Both the 77D and the 80D have impressive burst rates for their price ranges.
The 77D can shoot at 6 frames per second which is in an upgrade from 5 on the older T6s.
The 80D on the hand, can shoot at a slightly faster 7 frames per second.
To me both of these are pretty quick for general use. Unless you really are looking a super quick camera like the Canon 7D Mark 2, I think that either camera is fast enough.
Of course though the 80D can snap off a few extra shots every few seconds so that put it as the winner here.
Shutter Speed
Speaking about speed, the Canon 80D also has a faster maximum shutter speed.
The 80D can shoot at a ridiculous fast 1/8000th of a second, compared 1/4000th of a second.
This really comes in handy in bright situatuions or when you want to shoot at wide apertures outdoor.
For day to day shooting, its’ not a big difference though as 1/400th of a second is generally more than fast enough.
Battery Life
I did want to quickly touch on the battery life of both of these cameras.
The Canon 77D shoots with the LP-E17 batteries which are normally used in the smaller Rebel cameras like the Canon T6i. These work pretty well but i did find they ran out relatively quick especially when shooting video.
The 80D uses the Canon LP-E6 batteries which I’m a big fan of.
These are found in pro cameras like the 7D and 5D Series.
You pick up both of these batteries really cheaply these days on places like eBay and Amazon which is something I recommend, but overall if you want a longer battery life, the 80D is better for that.
Weather Sealing
Now both of these cameras are pretty tough and should hold up in most conditions, but if you know that you’re going to be in rainy and dusty areas, teh 80d should be better.
That’s because it’s more weather resistant than the 77D.
And of course let’s talk about price now. The Canon 80D is currently sitting at $1249 compared to just under a thousand for the 77D.
Is it worth $250 more? On the hand the 77D is also a real winner. If you do stills theres not a huge difference and for most people, the Dual autofocus and other video features on the 77D should be more than enough.
